TODAY we can reveal the secret heartache behind Britain’s Got Talent’s latest Welsh star Jamie Pugh.

Millions of viewers last night saw the 37-year-old cruise into the next round of the ITV1 contest with glowing praise from judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan.

The pizza delivery driver, dubbed the show’s most nervous contestant ever, conquered his lifelong terror of singing in public to give a moving version of Bring Him Home from West End musical Les Misérables.

But he hid the tragedy that struck 10 years ago – the death of his beloved wife Tracey, the mother of their three-year-old son Callum – from all who watched the show in an attempt to avoid the “sympathy vote”.

The 27-year-old died from a brain tumour, making Jamie a widower in just his 20s – and the former RAF engineer has battled since to rebuild his life.

Paul and Melanie Cole, who lived next door to Jamie and his late wife in Blackwood, Gwent, said he was a “broken man” when their “beautiful friend” died.

Melanie, 37, said: “Tracey and I would chat over the fence in our back gardens but then for a month or so she didn’t come out. I asked Jamie where she’d been and he told me she was very poorly – a brain tumour, he said." -jamiepugh.net

"Admit it, you either shed a tear over Jamie Pugh, or nearly shed a tear?

I’ve never had so many texts about one contestant on Britain’s Got Talent, not even after Susan Boyle.

And the reason is that we could all tell just what it meant to him to be fulfilling his dream on a huge stage.

‘It completed me,’ the pizza delivery man wept afterwards. And I believed him. He may or may not progress to the final stages of the competition (as I’ve said before, prepare to be shocked by the Top 40 selections..). But he got a standing ovation from 2000 people, and nobody can ever take that away from him.

The phrase ‘you’re what this show is all about’ has been massively over-used on every talent show in history. But it is the perfect phrase for Jamie, a man who I only learned from the papers today lost his wife to a brain tumour a few years ago.

He’s a humble, sensitive, thoroughly decent man going about his life in a completely unremarkable way; yet who possesses a quite remarkable talent.

My other favourite moment of last night’s show came with father-and-daughter act Gemma and Michael.

Their act was, to put it mildly, awkward to watch – her prancing around like a chicken, him wailing like a banshee.

But right at the end, when we judges had delivered our withering verdicts, Michael suddenly burst into fits of giggles, and so did everyone else.

It was a wonderful reminder to all the mean-spirited critics of this show that at its heart, it’s just a bit of fun. A warm, joyous, celebration of great British eccentricity. Michael and Gemma had a go, did their best, saw the funny side, and went home chuckling.

Unlike Janine and Sue, the keyboard and violin duo. It was quite a moment when Sue decided to ditch her best mate and go for glory herself, wasn’t it? And you’ll be unsurprised to hear that they are no longer friends.

It raised an interesting dilemma that I suspect got played out in millions of homes last night: would you dump a pal for fame, money and the chance to play at the Royal Variety Show?

I fear that the answer for many, in this celebrity-obsessed era, would be an unequivocal ‘yes’."- Piers

Since they first met, aged 16, at the prestigious Purcell Secondary School of Music, Janine Khalid and Sue Son had no doubt dreamed of the day they’d be given their big break – a chance to showcase their exceptional skills to a wider audience and perhaps in turn be given a shot at stardom.

So as the pair took to the stage and announced they were going to perform a semi-classical piece named Chance, which Janine had composed herself, they must have done so with a little trepidation.

“Ok then this is your chance!” said Piers, as Janine walked behind her keyboard and Sue prepared her electric violin.

Whilst there was no denying girls’ musical talent, Chance seemed to leave the room cold, and the judges united in their verdicts for the piece.

“I don’t think the song came together at all,” frowned Simon: “I thought it was dreary and indulgent, I don’t see where you could go with this.”

Amanda agreed: “It sounded like you were both playing completely different pieces of music – it didn’t sound great to me.”

“It’s a no girls.”

As the girls walked off stage, a discussion crackled at the judges’ desk, they didn’t seem 100% happy with their decision.

“I thought she was good, the violin player,” said Simon before pointed to the wings with an instruction of: “We want the violin girl to come out on her own.”

Backstage Sue was informed that the judges wanted to see her by herself, and after a brief: “Do you mind?” to her friend, she was back out there.

Sue was then told that the judges loved her, but hated the act, and was asked if she’d like to come back and audition as a soloist. She deliberated for what felt like an eternity before eventually agreeing: “Yes I will!” she said.

And so the next time we saw Sue she was on her own, determined to make the most of the second chance she’d been given.

“Being asked back was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” she said: “I have wanted this since I was a little girl so I couldn’t say no… if I don’t get through I’ll be devastated.”

When she took to the stage for the second time she played a medley of recognisable classical music beautifully on her electric violin.

When she had finished playing and the cheers from the audience had died down, Amanda said: “I know it must have been a tough decision to leave your friend, but it’s going to be the best decision you ever made darling!”

“Miles better than the double act,” nodded Piers.

“Wow, wow, wow!” said Simon: “That was an incredibly complex piece… that was phenomenal!”

"What makes Britain’s Got Talent the global phenomenon that it currently is, is the fantastic array of weird and wonderful acts that the show brings to our attention.

In a night that had already shown us a 15 year-old boy ‘playing’ God Save The Queen through his nose, we now had Kay Oresaya, a man who ‘plays’ the saxophone with nothing other than his “natural voice”!

“The judges are going to love me because my act is different,” declared Kay: “It is going to make me stand above my contemporaries and I believe Simon Cowell is going to be blown away by my gift.”

Onstage, without a musical instrument insight, Kay announced that he was:

“Going to be playing the saxophone with my natural voice!”

A look of bemusement flushed across the judges, before Amanda asked: “Do you think this is something the Queen would like to see at the Royal Variety?”

“Yes!” proclaimed Kay: “This is what the show is all about… it is unique. I will become a household name all over the world through this!”

As the sounds of The Jackson Jackson Five’s Ill Be There started filling the arena, Kay’s impression of a saxophone begun! The shocked looks on the audience’s faces were replaced by huge smiles and wails of laughter, even the judges seemed to be enjoying it… well Piers and Amanda at least!

It didn't matter that it sounded like Sweep from the Sooty Show being throttled because all were caught up in the hilarity and originality of it all!

“You said it was a unique show for a unique talent, and they don’t come any more unique than you… I thought that was absolutely brilliant!” Piers beamed.

Simon disagreed, dashing Kay’s original hope that he’d be “blown away” by his act: “You said you were going to play the saxophone, that was NOT a saxophone!” he continued: “It sounded like a baby crying over a Michael Jackson song!”

But with Amanda siding with Piers to vote Kay through to the next round, Simon’s protests fell on deaf ears, and Kay The Human Saxophone had survived to ‘play’ another day!" - talent.itv.com

"Tonight’s show ended with a classic BGT moment that will have had millions around the country biting their bottom lip and reaching for the tissues.

By day 37 year-old Jamie Pugh is a warehouse worker, by night he delivers pizzas, but this existence is a far cry from the life he wishes he could live, one where is phenomenal talent is accepted and appreciated by other people.

Saturday night sees Britain’s Got Talent head to Cardiff and one man waiting backstage is more nervous than most of the acts.

Jamie Pugh, a 37 year old Warehouse worker and pizza delivery driver from Gwent, hasn’t slept in three nights and he’s worried his nerves might just prove too much.

As he explains, “I suffer from severe stage fright, it has totally crippled me, and I’ve come today to see if I can get through 3 minutes.”

Nerves can often affect the voice producing an uncontrolled sound that would certainly not impress the judges. Can Jamie get his nerves under control for long enough to impress?

Performing in front of the live audience and Judges is miles away from Jamie’s day to day job, “in the day time I work three days a week driving a van and in the evenings I deliver pizza. A pizza delivery man overcomes crippling stage fright to wow Britain’s Got Talent judges with a song from Les Miserables on the next show.
Jamie Pugh, 37, attended the Cardiff auditions, and revealed that he was so terrified that he had not slept for three nights.

He explained: “I suffer from severe stage fright, it has totally crippled me, and I’ve come today to see if I can get through three minutes.”

He continued: “I’m just a simple bloke from the Valleys, but my dream is to sing at the Royal Variety in front of a live orchestra.”

His biggest fear was walking out on stage and freezing - but instead he left the judges spellbound by launching into Bring Him Home.
The whole theatre was on its feet, bringing tears and a look of shock to Jamie’s face.

Piers Morgan told him: “I wasn’t expecting that kind of performance from you.
“You deliver pizzas at night, for goodness’ sake, and you come on this stage - one of the biggest talent shows in the world - and do a performance like that. I thought it was incredible.”

Simon Cowell agreed: “It’s people like you (who are) the reason why we come to Wales every year, I think you could be a special talent, but you have to start believing in yourself.”
